Windows Shortcut, Cisco Podcast, Free Tools & More...

Hello IT Pro,

It’s time for another week’s IT Pro Tuesday. As always, we have to state that we don’t have any affiliation with any of the brands listed below unless we state otherwise.

Elasticsearch Security

Elastic Stack now offers it’s basic security features free of charge. With these basic features you can:

  • Encrypt network traffic

  • Add, manage and remove users

  • Create definitions to protect difference levels of access

Almathden let us know about this, and it was really great news to start the day with.

A Tip

Last week we gave shortcuts for using the 4-pane explorer in a Windows system. SevaraB then followed up by telling us that you don’t have to stop at four. All you need to do is to head over to the taskbar and right-click on the clock. Then select, “Show the windows side by side.” This lays them out in neat order and works for even 36 windows. This tip will also work if you click just about any spot on the taskbar that doesn’t have icons or the start button.

The Broadcast Storm

This podcast is aimed at networking pros working with Cisco. According to BluePieceOfPaper, it’s required reading if you’re studying towards CCNA/NP. The podcast is hosted by Kevin Wallace, someone who really knows their stuff. The podcasts are a maximum of 15 minutes, and you’ll find many that cover exam questions. Best of all, it’s presented in an interesting and easy to learn format.

BornToBeRoot NETworkManager

This tool is extremely useful when you need to troubleshoot a network issue or manage the network itself. If you’re wanting to use it with PowerShell, you’ll have to have Windows 10. The features you have access to include:

  • Dashboard

  • IP scanner

  • Network interface

  • Ping

  • Port scanner

  • Traceroute

  • PuTTY

  • Remote desktop

  • DNS lookup

  • TigerVNC

  • Wake on LAN

  • Whois

  • HTTP headers

  • SNMP

  • Subnet calculator

  • And a lot more besides

Thanks to TheZNerd tool for this great tip.

Awesome Selfhosted

This list is nothing short of awesome. It includes web applications and software network services that you can self-host. This will save you a bundle in rental fees from SaaS providers. You’ll find a lot of categories to choose from - everything from analytics to blogging platforms. Check it out for yourself - there’s too much on the site to go into here.

That’s all for this week. See you at the same time and same place next week. And please keep those tips coming in.
